The Courage to be Open:
Meeting Each Other in the Moment with Presence.
We all have habitual ways of paying attention to our own experience and the experience of other people. These habits are rooted in beliefs about our own capacities, and can prevent us from experiencing genuine transformation and growth. In order to have authentic interactions that can lead to genuine transformation, we need a certain kind of courage that gives us strength not necessarily to assert a position but to be open to our whole experience, including what we would otherwise disregard. In this meeting, we will explore for ourselves what limits our courage to be vulnerable and open, and what this kind of courage can do for our work with others. The meeting will include a short meditation, talk, time for personal exploration, and discussion.
• Learn a basic meditation for centering.
• Practice deliberate listening.
• Gain insight into habits of avoidance and defensiveness.
• Begin to differentiate between false courage - e.g. brashness and aggressiveness - and real courage.
